Open your mind

There’s an interesting concept in psychology called confirmation bias. It’s something we all engage in to some degree, but it can cause real problems for many people. Simply put, confirmation bias occurs when we selectively notice or focus on evidence which tends to support the things we already believe or want to be true while ignoring evidence that disconfirms those beliefs or ideas. In short, it’s a tendency to only accept information that confirms or supports your personal belief or position. Or, rather, it confirms your deeply rooted bias!

The less confirmation bias you have, the more open-minded you are. Whereas people who only accept confirmation to their bias typically have blinders on. With that said, I ask you to consider this human tendency today and see where you fall on this scale. Do you listen to opposing views and consider them, or do you close your mind to anything that weakens your position and challenges your belief, no matter how powerful that contradictory evidence is? Life has taught me that listening to opposing positions expands my mind, strengthens my convictions and improves my relationships. What about you?
